Decoding ^{2nd Gen} Eurocode 7: Basis of geotechnical design

Synopsis

This course has been completely rewritten to cover the second generation of Eurocode 7, with emphasis on how to ensure the required level of reliability is obtained when designing geotechnical structures.

The course provides a thorough introduction to the second generation Eurocode (EN 1990:2023) and Eurocode 7 Part 1 (EN 1997-1:202x), looking especially at the verification of ultimate and serviceability limit states. Methods for determining characteristic ground properties are described in detail.

The purpose of this course is to provide the fundamental building blocks that underpin structural and geotechnical design. The standards are inherently mathematical and the course attempts to simplify this as much as possible. An understanding of this is key to comprehending the more practical parts of Eurocode 7.

This course has been registered by CITB NI for grant assistance to registered in scope employers.

Pre-requisites

The 'Basis' course requires no prior knowledge of Eurocode 7 and is an essential starter for our more specialized geotechnical design courses on ground proerties, shallow foundations, and deep foundations.

Speaker

'Basis of geotechnical design' is presented by Dr Andrew Bond (of Geocentrix).

Andrew is the Chair of BSI committee B/526 Geotechnics (since July 2023) and was past-Chair of CEN committee TC250/SC7 Geotechnical design (from 2010-2019). He played a key role in the development of the 2nd Generation Eurocode 7. Andrew has been a UK delegate on SC7 since 1997.

Andrew is clearly very knowledgeable about the Eurocode regarding geotechnical design and this course does a great job of presenting the key information & ideas that we should be aware of. The way the course was timetabled (i.e. 6x 90 min lectures over 2 weeks) was ideal for me as it meant my normal working week was barely disrupted. It also provided me with sufficient time to reflect on the course material between lectures. Each lecture also began promptly at the advertised start time. Some of the mathematics was slightly too much for me to understand/take in at first glance, however, I’m sure when I go back over the notes it will become clearer

It was very informative. I work in the Dredging and Reclamation industry with my focus being more towards geotechnical investigations (particularly nearshore) and ground improvement methods.
